Tony Nominations (and my predictions for the frontrunners)

Radcliffe and Larroquette
So, the Tony nominations were announced today and there are a few nominations that made me happy as well as a few things that I'm shocked about.

First - I can't believe that Daniel Radcliffe didn't get a nomination for How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.   He threw himself into that part, danced up a storm and turned out to have a pretty good singing voice as well.   I'm sure he is bummed but will be the professional we know he is when asked about not getting nominated.

And while I'm glad that Scottsboro Boys got so many nominations, for me, it was just a good, not great, show, even the score has only a few highlights in my opinion.   And yet it still gets 12 nominations, with Joshua Henry most likely knocking Radcliffe out of a nomination for Best Actor in a Musical - oh well.

I'm thrilled that a Special Tony Award will be given to the Handspring Puppet Company for their work on War Horse.  As I mentioned in my review, it's hard to say if their work would be considered costumes or not- so I'm glad that since they were hard to be categorized that they will end up being rewarded anyway.  I think they are the front runner for Best Play as well.

Also glad to see that Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown was remembered for it's score and the performances of Laura Benanti and Patti LuPone.

Mantello and Hickey in A Normal Heart
And I'm extrememly happy that A Normal Heart and it's performers Joe Mantello, Ellen Barkin and John Benjamin Hickey all got nominated.  I think that Barkin and Hickey are the front runners in their categories.

Also, not surprised at all that Wonderland got shut out of any nominations and that Priscilla didn't get a Best Musical nom.  I do think that Book of Mormon will win the most awards, but there are a few categories where I think it is a little too close to call who will win- Best Featured Actress in a Musical is the hottest race if you ask me.

War Horse

The Tony's air on CBS on Sunday, June 12th at 8pm.
